The Difference between a Health checkup and a Medical checkup
Hello everyone!
The other day, we had a staff "Medical checkup" at our clinic, and I took it myself.
I have had annual "Health checkups" in Japan in the past,
but the one I had at our clinic this time was a so-called "Medical checkup" with a full range of items.
Do you know the difference between a Healht checkup and a Medical checkup?
The Health checkups are health examinations, which are performed to check one's health status and to prevent illness.
On the other hand, Medical checkups are performed to detect specific diseases and are intended for early detection and early treatment. Cancer screening, physical examinations, brain scans, etc.
fall under this category of medical checkups.
In my long practice as a surgeon, I have seen many patients who were found to have advanced malignant disease and visited a hospital, even though they "had a checkup every year" or "went to the hospital regularly. First, the former are those whose "checkups" were either physical examinations or inadequate examinations. The latter are those who had been seeing a hospital regularly for a specific disease (e.g., hypertension or diabetes) and had blood samples taken, but had not received a comprehensive medical checkup.
Inspect your own "Checkups"!
First, let's review the contents of the health checkups that you are (hopefully) receiving every year. Please note, by the way, that the Work Permit Health checkup is not a "Medical checkup"!
We recommend for those over 40 years of age, who have a higher incidence of malignant diseases and cardiovascular diseases associated with arteriosclerosis, undergo a proper "Medical checkup".
Add examination items to the general basic examination items that are appropriate for each individual.
For Example…..
■ Everyone over 40
Cancer screening: blood tumor marker test, abdominal echography, upper/lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, etc.
■ Women over 40
Cancer screening: Mammography, breast ultrasound, gynecological examinations, etc.
■ Those with obesity, hyperlipidemia noted, and heavy drinkers
Evaluation of liver damage and hepatocellular carcinoma: abdominal echocardiography, etc.
■ Those who have headaches, have been diagnosed or are being treated for high blood pressure, or have lifestyle-related diseases (Diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia).
Brain Screening (mainly to evaluate arteriosclerosis and cerebral aneurysms):ABI, carotid echocardiography, head MRI, etc.
